Dougal McKenzie was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1968. He studied Fine Art at Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen (B.A.hons. 1986-90); Fine Art at University of Ulster (M.A. 1990-91). He was co-director at Catalyst Arts, Belfast (1994-96) and Lecturer in Painting at Limerick School of Art and Design (1996-2004). He is currently a lecturer in Painting at Belfast School of Art and is based at QSS Bedford Street studios in Belfast.

Awards include a prize winner at the John Moores 23 Exhibition of Contemporary Painting (2004) and Arts Council of Northern Ireland Major Individual Award (2005). He was also selected for the John Moores Retrospective, South Korea (2010) and for the John Moores 2012 Painting Prize.
